The impact of the war
Bert Sheldon, who went to Acocks Green Junior School, recalls the death of his best friend in an air raid.
back to story
I lived in Tyseley I and I used to go Acocks Green Junior School. And my best little pal there, he was the same age as me, eleven, he was called Norman Prince and he lived in Acocks Green. And I well remember after a heavy nights bombing going to school one morning and we all had to go in assembly and the headmaster explained that this Norman Prince, unfortunately, had been killed and the whole family. Well, it really shook me, you can imagine, you're a young child and you hear a thing like this. I think I cried for about 3 days. But anyway, we went to look where the house was and it was completely demolished and I believe it was the first aerial torpedo to be dropped on Birmingham in the war.
