The transport collection includes several thousand objects. They illustrate inventions from the 18th century to modern times, for moving on road or railway, by air, and on the water: bicycles and locomotives, motorcycles and cars, aircraft and trams. The collection ranges from the small experimental model locomotive made by William Murdock in 1784, and early dogcarts powered by a simple engine, to the magnificent 'Railton Mobile Special', which held the land speed record from 1939 to 1964.

Works by many great engineers such as Reginald Mitchell, the designer of the famous Spitfire aircraft, Sir Alec Issigonis, the creator of the much loved Morris Mini-Minor, or Sir William Arthur Stanier, the designer of the magnificent locomotive ’City of Birmingham’ are to be found in the collection. Many artefacts represent the production of well-known companies of Birmingham and Coventry, such as Austin, Lanchester, and Armstrong Siddeley.

These objects can be seen on display at Thinktank, and also at MCC by appointment.
