Domestic Appliances

BACK

Domestic appliances in the Science and Industry collection originate mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. They illustrate impressive changes in all areas of daily life.

Some objects, like the gas pipes used by William Murdock to light his house, reflect early efforts and achievements in this sphere. But it was almost a century later, with the introduction of public supplies of gas and then electricity that devices invented to ease housework greatly influenced and irreversibly changed people’s everyday life.

The collection clearly corresponds to early recollections of many people. The artefacts are mainly familiar, and these are easily associated with the lives of our parents and grandparents, or our own childhood. Some ordinary objects, like the Singer sewing machine, became world famous and unmistakably recognisable signs of historical era.

These objects can be seen on display at Thinktank, and also at MCC by appointment.
