Marconi-Stille Tape Recorder

Marconi-Stille Tape Recorder | © Thinktank Trust | Stored at the Museum Collections Centre - look out for public open days

Prime Minister Winston Churchill made powerful motivational speeches. He inspired people to carry on despite the lack of food, long working hours and sleepless nights caused by air raids. This Marconi-Stille tape recorder was used by the BBC to record radio broadcasts. By taping them they could be repeated many times. Many Churchill speeches only exist because they were recorded on machines like it. News broadcasts on the radio and in the cinema were very popular. People wanted to know how the war was going. Reports were often vague as the media was heavily censored to stop German spies finding out if air raids were successful.  MORE
