World War Two was horrific. Both sides used air raids indiscriminately. Hitler ordered the systematic murder of Jews in the parts of Europe he controlled. The United States used the atom bomb in August 1945 to defeat Japan, bringing the war to a swift end. Poisonous gas was not used as a weapon by either side. All of the nations taking part in the war had signed an international agreement in 1925 not to use it. It was widely used in World War One causing blindness, long-term lung damage and death.  BACK to story
