This crossbow is from the ‘Golden Age’ of European hand weapons. It was probably made in Germany in the early 1600s. At this time, armourers made weapons not just for military use but also as elaborate, highly decorated artworks. German armourers were particularly famous for their sophisticated ornamental decoration.
