Drawing of Murdock’s locomotive

Drawing of Murdock’s locomotive

In 1884, S. Smiles wrote: ‘One dark night, Murdock determined to try his little model on the road leading to the church, just outside Redruth. He lit the little spirit lamp, and waited for the water to boil. With a puff and a snort the model started off at a good speed.
Suddenly, in front of him, he heard exclamations... He saw the worthy parson of the parish in a great state of fear, calling out at the top of his voice that the Evil One, breathing out fire and smoke, had but a moment ago passed him on the road’.
