One of the most important metal-related industries was making arms. By 1700, Birmingham was becoming well-known as an arms-making town.
During the English Civil War, local makers supplied weapons to Parliamentary forces fighting against the King.
Later, the town had a Gun Quarter, and the Gun Barrel Proof House opened in 1813. These flintlock pistols were locally made and proofed (tested).
There were lots of small businesses in the gun trade. This was also the case with other metalworking industries...
