 As mass production developed, Birmingham businessmen took up the latest ideas. John Nettlefold, a Birmingham screw manufacturer, went to the Paris exhibition in 1851. He saw a machine for making screws designed by an American, Thomas Sloan. Nettlefold and his business partner bought exclusive rights to use Sloan’s designs. Nettlefold & Chamberlain became Britain’s leading screw-making firm. Machines like this made screws in two automatic operations. They were so easily supervised that one woman could attend many machines.
