The Longstone Lighthouse is situated on Longstone Rock, off the coast of Northumberland. It was built in 1826. The architect Joseph Nelson designed a red and white circular tower of rough stone, with iron railings around the lantern gallery.
The cost of the lighthouse and the house for the keeper was approximately £4,771, the lantern alone costing £1,441.
In 1838, Longstone Lighthouse was the scene of the wreck of the steamship ‘Forfarshire’. Grace Darling (1815-1841), the 22-year old daughter of the lighthouse keeper, courageously helped to rescue nine people. BACK to story |
