 In 1885, over 50 years before John Cobb’s first record-breaking run, Karl Benz built the first practical motorcar in Germany. By 1894 Benz & Company were making this model, the Velo. It was the first car to be made in large numbers.
France then took the lead in making motorcars and improving designs. A small number of motoring enthusiasts in Britain bought imported cars. Demand grew when strict laws limiting cars to walking pace on public roads were abolished in 1896. Britain was starting to fall in love with the motorcar... MORE |
