Record-breaking cars helped their drivers become celebrities. Other celebrity owners made the Mini a cultural icon and the most popular British car ever. Designed by Alexander Issigonis the Morris Minor-Mini was launched in 1959. It even starred in the film ‘The Italian Job’.
Britain’s major car firms never overcame their slow start and now there are none left. However, over 1.6 million cars are still made in the country by foreign firms, including the new BMW MINI. Britain stills loves cars and is the home of the world’s most successful motor sport industry.
