 Production of the Seven began in earnest in 1923, with 20,000 made by 1927. Astounding success soon brought imitators. Austin’s rivals unveiled the Morris Minor in 1928. By the 1930s consumers had a range of small, inexpensive cars to choose from.
Money was tight for most British people during this time. Also a new tax introduced in 1921 penalised larger cars. So small, cheap cars were big business. By 1933 they made up 60% of all new cars sold.
The last Sevens were made in 1939. Nearly 300,000 were sold worldwide. BACK to story |
