Lord Herbert Austin (1866-1941) | © Houlton Archive
Herbert Austin was just seventeen when his Uncle Walter visited in 1883. Walter was an engineer, who had emigrated to Australia. After hearing his uncle’s stories of a beautiful country full of opportunities Herbert longed to live there too.
He recalled how he had talked his mother into letting him go, “I think she must have been convinced that the desire had bitten so deep that I should never be happy unless I had my chance, because she talked it over with father, and I gained permission to return with my uncle.” MORE |
