Automatic Musical Box

Automatic Musical Box | © Thinktank Trust | Come and see it in the Making Things gallery at Thinktank

At the drop of a penny an Automatic Musical Box livened-up pubs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Favourite tunes could be played even if there were no musicians available. George Salter & Co., a famous West Bromwich firm, made this one. They normally made weighing equipment.
These are the forerunners of the modern Juke Box. Many tunes were available on the metal discs that they played. Each disc held just one tune, and they had to be changed regularly by hand. Find out more about music technology of the past...
